The annual
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
in
New York City
, the world's largest
parade
,
is presented by the U.S.-based
department store
chain
Macy's
. The parade started in 1924,
tying it for the second-oldest Thanksgiving parade in the United States with
America's Thanksgiving Parade
in
Detroit
(with both parades being four years younger than
Philadelphia's Thanksgiving Day Parade
). The three-hour parade is held in
Manhattan
, ending outside
Macy's Herald Square
, and takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Eastern Standard Time
on
Thanksgiving Day
, and has been televised nationally on
NBC
since 1953. Employees at Macy's department stores have the option of marching in the parade.
Thanksgiving
is a
federal holiday in the United States
, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It is sometimes called
American Thanksgiving
(outside the United States) to distinguish it from
the Canadian holiday of the same name
and
related celebrations in other regions
. It originated as a
harvest festival
, and the centerpiece of Thanksgiving celebrations remains
Thanksgiving dinner
. The dinner traditionally consists of foods and dishes indigenous to
the Americas
, namely
turkey
,
potatoes
(usually
mashed
),
stuffing
,
squash
,
corn
(maize),
green beans
,
cranberries
(typically in
sauce form
), and
pumpkin pie
. Other Thanksgiving customs include charitable organizations offering Thanksgiving dinner for the poor, attending
religious services
, watching parades, and viewing
football games
. In American culture Thanksgiving is regarded as the beginning of the fall–winter
holiday season
, which includes
Christmas
and the
New Year
.
The
New England
colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings,"
days of prayer
thanking God for blessings such as a military victory or the end of a drought. The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the
Pilgrims
after their first harvest in the
New World
in October 1621. This feast lasted three days, and—as recounted by attendee
Edward Winslow
—was attended by 90
Wampanoag
and 53 Pilgrims.
Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by President
George Washington
after a request by Congress.
President
Thomas Jefferson
chose not to observe the holiday, and its celebration was intermittent until President
Abraham Lincoln
, in 1863, proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent
Father
who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.
On June 28, 1870, President
Ulysses S. Grant
signed into law the
Holidays Act
that made Thanksgiving a yearly appointed federal holiday in
Washington D.C.
On January 6, 1885, an act by Congress made Thanksgiving, and other federal holidays, a paid holiday for all federal workers throughout the United States.
Under President
Franklin D. Roosevelt
, the
date was moved
to one week earlier, observed between 1939 and 1941 amid significant controversy. From 1942 onwards, Thanksgiving, by an act of
Congress
, signed into law by FDR, received a permanent observation date, the fourth Thursday in November, no longer at the discretion of the President.
Miracle on 34th Street
(initially released as
The Big Heart
in the
United Kingdom
)
is a 1947 American
Christmas
comedy-drama
film released by
20th Century Fox
, written and directed by
George Seaton
and based on a story by
Valentine Davies
. It stars
Maureen O'Hara
,
John Payne
,
Natalie Wood
, and
Edmund Gwenn
. The story takes place between
Thanksgiving Day
and
Christmas Day
in
New York City
, and focuses on the effect of a department store
Santa Claus
who claims to be the real Santa. The film has become a perennial Christmas favorite.
Miracle on 34th Street
won three
Academy Awards
: Gwenn for
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
, Valentine Davies for
Best Writing, Original Story
, and George Seaton for
Best Writing, Screenplay
. The film was nominated for
Best Picture
, losing to
Gentleman's Agreement
. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the
National Film Registry
by the
Library of Congress
as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". The
Academy Film Archive
preserved
Miracle on 34th Street
in 2009.
Davies also wrote a
short novelization
of the tale, which was published by
Harcourt Brace
simultaneously with the film's release.
Christmas
is an annual festival commemorating
the birth
of
Jesus Christ
, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people
around the world
. A
feast
central to the
Christian
liturgical year
, it is preceded by the season of
Advent
or the
Nativity Fast
and initiates the season of
Christmastide
, which historically in the West lasts
twelve days
and culminates on
Twelfth Night
. Christmas Day is a
public holiday
in
many countries
, is celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians,
as well as
culturally
by many non-Christians,
and forms an integral part of the
holiday season
organized around it.
The traditional Christmas narrative, the Nativity of Jesus, delineated in the
New Testament
says that Jesus was born in
Bethlehem
, in accordance with
messianic prophecies
. When
Joseph
and
Mary
arrived in the city, the inn had no room and so they were offered a
stable
where the
Christ Child
was soon born, with
angels
proclaiming this news to shepherds who then spread the word.
Santa Claus
, also known as
Father Christmas
,
Saint Nicholas
,
Saint Nick
,
Kris Kringle
, or simply
Santa
, is a
legendary
character
originating in
Western Christian culture
who is said to
bring gifts on Christmas Eve
of toys and candy to well-behaved children,
and either
coal
or nothing to naughty children. He is said to accomplish this with the aid of
Christmas elves
, who make the toys in
his workshop
at the
North Pole
, and
flying reindeer
who pull his
sleigh
through the air.

A
jack-o'-lantern
(or
jack o'lantern
) is a carved
pumpkin
,
turnip
, or other
root vegetable
lantern,
commonly associated with the
Halloween
holiday. Its name comes from the reported phenomenon of strange lights flickering over
peat
bogs
, called
will-o'-the-wisps
or
jack-o'-lanterns
. The name is also tied to the Irish legend of
Stingy Jack
, a
drunkard
who bargains with
Satan
and is doomed to roam the Earth with only a hollowed turnip to light his way.
Jack-o'-lanterns carved from pumpkins are a yearly Halloween tradition that came to the
United States
with
Irish immigrants
.
In a jack-o'-lantern, the top of the pumpkin or turnip is cut off to form a lid, the inside flesh is scooped out, and an image—usually a scary or funny
face
—is carved out of the
rind
to expose the hollow interior. To create the
lantern
effect, a light source, traditionally a
flame
such as a
candle
or
tealight
, is placed within before the lid is closed. However, artificial jack-o'-lanterns with
electric lights
are also marketed. It is common to see jack-o'-lanterns used as external and internal decorations prior to and on Halloween.
Halloween
or
Hallowe'en
(a contraction of "All Hallows' evening"), also known as
Allhalloween
,
All Hallows' Eve
, or
All Saints' Eve
, is a celebration
observed in many countries
on 31 October, the eve of the
Western Christian
feast of
All Hallows' Day
. It begins the observance of
Allhallowtide
, the time in the
liturgical year
dedicated to remembering the dead, including
saints
(hallows),
martyrs
, and all the faithful departed.
One theory holds that many Halloween traditions may have been influenced by ancient
Celtic
harvest festivals
, particularly the
Gaelic
festival
Samhain
, which may have had
pagan
roots; some scholars hold that Samhain may have been
Christianized
as
All Hallow's Day
, along with its eve, by the
early Church
.Other academics believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a
Christian
holiday, being the
vigil
of All Hallow's Day.
Halloween activities include
trick-or-treating
(or the related
guising
and
souling
), attending
Halloween costume
parties, carving pumpkins into
jack-o'-lanterns
, lighting
bonfires
,
apple bobbing
,
divination
games, playing
pranks
, visiting
haunted attractions
, telling scary stories, as well as watching
horror films
. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting
candles
on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration.
Some Christians historically
abstained from meat
on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain
vegetarian
foods on this
vigil
day, including apples,
potato pancakes
, and
soul cakes
.
New York's Village Halloween Parade is an annual holiday parade and street pageant presented on the night of every Halloween in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. The Village Halloween Parade, initiated in 1973 by Greenwich Village puppeteer and mask maker Ralph Lee, is the world's largest Halloween parade and the only nighttime parade in New York City. The parade reports itself to have 50,000 "costumed participants" and 2 million spectators.
It has been called "New York's Carnival." The parade is largely a spontaneous event as individual marchers can just show up in costume at the starting point without registering or paying anything. The parade's most signature features are its large puppets which are animated by hundreds of volunteers. The official parade theme each year is applied to the puppets. In addition to the puppets, the website reports that more than 50 marching bands participate each year. In addition, there are some commercial Halloween parade floats.
The official route on Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street, all within Manhattan, is 1.4 miles long (the distance from the gathering spot on Sixth Avenue from Canal Street to Spring Street adds another 0.2 miles). The parade usually starts at 7 PM New York time and lasts for about two to three hours.
