In 1776, the Congress voted a gold medal for Washington in appreciation of his driving the British out of Boston. This was the first medal awarded in the newly formed United States.Congress gave medals to other Commanding officers and Admirals during the war but did not offer any type of general award for enlisted mem. To correct this error, General Washington established the
Badge of
Military Merit,
7 August 1782. This was for forerunner of one of the most famous U.S. medals, The Purple Heart. Three awards were made before the badge fell into disuse. The current Purple Heart was designed and established in 1932.
Offered is a exact replica of the original Badge of Military Merit. The cloth "Purple Heart" is attached to a small piece of card stock with a short history of the award.
