    Original book, 424 pages
    , A4+, 2019
The book of the full member of the Russian Academy of arts, candidate of historical Sciences A. V. Kibovsky is devoted to one of the modern and most popular types of examination of works of Russian portrait painting — historical and subject method of attribution. The basis of this method, scientifically substantiated by the author in 2000, is the analysis of artistic images with the help of knowledge about uniforms, awards and heraldry of the Russian Empire in conjunction with genealogical, biographical and historical data.
For a quarter of a century of practical work A.V. Kibovsky was able to identify and return the lost names of many “portraits of the unknown” in museums and private collections. 500 of them are presented in this book. In addition, the publication placed the essay on the development of the historical and subject method of attribution 1880s to the present day, in which he told about his difficult and sometimes tragic twists and turns in the twentieth century and about the scientists who laid the theoretical and practical foundations that contributed to the scientific recognition of the method at the turn of this century.
The publication is addressed to a wide range of readers and is the largest guide to military iconography today. Its uniqueness is that until recently all the portraits were listed as unknown or were signed by other people’s names. Many attributions are introduced into scientific use for the first time. The book will be of interest to both professionals — art historians, Museum professionals — and all those interested in Russian painting and the history of pre-revolutionary Russia.
